The Almanac's Take

The most criminally overlooked middle infielder of the 1980s, Whitaker delivered All-Star production for nearly two decades while flying completely under the radar in Detroit. His 244 career home runs rank among the highest totals ever for a second baseman, yet he's barely remembered outside of Michigan.

Whitaker's 1991 campaign at age 34 showcased his rare blend of power and patience, posting a career-high .881 OPS while maintaining the defensive excellence that earned him three Gold Gloves. His steady .276 average over 19 seasons masked genuine offensive impact — that 109 career OPS+ represents consistently above-average production from a premium defensive position.

The lasting tragedy is how Whitaker's quiet excellence got overshadowed by flashier contemporaries. He formed one of baseball's longest-running double-play partnerships with shortstop Alan Trammell, yet somehow became the forgotten half of that duo despite comparable offensive numbers.
