The Almanac's Take

The ageless wonder threw his first major league pitch at 42 and still dominated. Paige's 1948 rookie season with Cleveland helped the Indians win the World Series, proving what Negro League fans had known for decades — he was baseball's greatest showman and one of its finest pitchers.

That microscopic 1.01 ERA in 1944 tells only part of the story. Paige's 166 career ERA+ across nearly four decades shows remarkable consistency despite jumping between leagues, barnstorming teams, and eventually the majors. He struck out over 1,600 batters while posting a 2.78 ERA, numbers that would be impressive for any pitcher, let alone one who didn't reach the big leagues until middle age.

His eight All-Star selections span from the Negro Leagues to the majors, a testament to pure talent transcending baseball's artificial barriers. Paige didn't just break ground — he made it look effortless.
