The Almanac's Take

Murray achieved something that sounds impossible in today's game: he collected exactly 504 home runs and 3,255 hits without anybody really noticing. "Steady Eddie" never led the league in homers or RBIs, never hit .300 for a full season until his eighth year, yet quietly assembled one of the most consistent offensive careers in baseball history.

The numbers tell the story of relentless durability. Murray played 20 seasons and reached double digits in home runs in 19 of them. He drove in at least 75 runs in 16 consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1992. That 1982 season represents his offensive peak — a .940 OPS when the league averaged .704 — but it was hardly an outlier for a player who posted an OPS+ of 115 or better in 13 different seasons.

Switch-hitting first basemen who can field don't grow on trees, especially ones who show up every day for two decades. Murray's three Gold Gloves merely confirmed what Orioles fans knew: he was the steady heartbeat of those great Baltimore teams.
