The Almanac's Take

"Smiling Stan" earned his nickname for good reason — he almost never got thrown out of games despite playing 16 seasons in an era when umpire arguments were practically mandatory. The Cubs third baseman's perpetual good humor masked a quietly excellent hitter who posted a .301 career average while playing stellar defense at the hot corner.

Hack's consistency was remarkable: he hit .300 or better in eight seasons and made five All-Star teams during Chicago's competitive 1930s and 1940s. His 57 career home runs seem modest now, but he was built for contact and getting on base in a pre-power era. The left-handed hitter thrived in Wrigley Field's favorable conditions for his spray-hitting style.

What made Hack special was his combination of offensive production and defensive reliability at third base, anchoring Cubs teams that reached four World Series during his tenure. He represents the prototype of the steady, dependable corner infielder who quietly accumulated value year after year.
