The Almanac's Take

The mustachioed right-hander with the intimidating scowl won a Cy Young Award despite never posting a 20-win season. Vuckovich's peak came in 1982 with Milwaukee when he went 18-6 with a 3.34 ERA, earning him the AL's top pitching honor in a career-defining campaign that helped push the Brewers to their only World Series appearance.

His 1978 Cardinals season tells the real story of his talent. That 2.54 ERA and 145 ERA+ represent elite production, even buried in a .500 record that reflects St. Louis's offensive struggles. Vuckovich threw hard and wasn't afraid to pitch inside, compiling 882 strikeouts across 12 seasons while maintaining a respectable 3.66 ERA.

The Wisconsin native became a cult figure in Milwaukee, where his fierce demeanor and clutch pitching made him a perfect fit for Harvey's Wallbangers. His career ended prematurely due to shoulder problems, but not before establishing himself as one of the more memorable characters of the early 1980s.
