Nellie Fox
The scrappy second baseman who made contact an art form struck out just 216 times in over 9,200 career at-bats — a jaw-dropping rate that seems impossible in today's game. Fox's .288 average came from pure bat control and situational hitting, not power, as his 35 career homers attest.
What made Fox special was his defensive wizardry at second base, earning three Gold Gloves when the award was still new. He anchored those great White Sox teams of the 1950s and early 1960s, making 12 All-Star teams despite playing in an era loaded with middle infield talent.
His 1959 MVP award came during Chicago's pennant-winning season, proving that value extends far beyond home runs. The Veterans Committee finally recognized his sustained excellence in 1997, validating a career built on consistency rather than flash.
