The Almanac's Take

The first Canadian-born player to win MVP honors, Walker turned Coors Field into his personal launching pad while proving he could hit anywhere. His 1997 campaign stands as one of the most dominant offensive seasons of the 1990s — a .366 average with 49 homers and an otherworldly 1.172 OPS that was 55% better than league average.

Critics fixated on Coors inflation, but Walker's road numbers tell the real story. Even away from Denver's thin air, he posted a career .278 average with substantial power, numbers that would make most players' careers. The seven Gold Gloves weren't altitude-assisted either — Walker possessed one of the strongest, most accurate arms in right field history.

His peak OPS+ of 155 places him among the elite offensive forces of his generation. The Hall of Fame finally recognized what the numbers always showed: altitude or not, Walker was simply one of the best all-around players of his era.
