The Almanac's Take

Bowa hit just 15 home runs across 16 major league seasons — fewer than many players manage in a single month. But dismissing him as a weak hitter misses the point entirely. This was a shortstop who made his living with his glove and his legs, embodying the scrappy, fundamentally sound player that defined 1970s baseball.

His 1975 season tells the story perfectly: a .305 average that represented his only time cracking .300, paired with just two homers. Bowa's value came from getting on base, stealing bags, and turning double plays with surgical precision. Those two Gold Gloves don't capture how consistently excellent his defense was throughout his prime years with Philadelphia.

The five All-Star selections reflect a player who maximized limited tools through intelligence and grit. In an era when shortstops weren't expected to hit for power, Bowa's steady glove work and ability to manufacture runs made him indispensable to those Phillies teams.
