The Almanac's Take

The 1983 Cy Young winner who somehow made it stick despite modest stuff. Hoyt peaked with a 24-10 record and 3.66 ERA for the White Sox that season, riding exceptional control and an uncanny ability to pitch to contact when it mattered most.

His career 4.00 ERA and 96 ERA+ tell the story of a pitcher who maximized limited talent through guile and location. Hoyt struck out just 4.7 batters per nine innings over his career, yet managed a respectable 98-68 record by keeping walks to a minimum and inducing weak contact.

The 1985 season in San Diego represented his final quality campaign, posting a 112 ERA+ at age 30. By then, the combination of declining velocity and increasing hitter familiarity had begun to catch up with him, ending his career just two years later.
