Jim Perry
Perry's 1970 Cy Young Award came in one of the most pitcher-friendly eras in baseball history, when his 24-12 record and 3.04 ERA translated to an impressive 147 ERA+. That season represented the peak of a career built on durability and consistency rather than dominant stuff — he averaged over 250 innings from 1969 to 1973.
The elder brother of Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry, Jim carved out his own identity as a workhorse starter who could eat innings without spectacular strikeout numbers. His 1,576 career strikeouts across 3,286 innings reflect a pitcher who lived on command and changing eye levels rather than overpowering velocity.
Perry's best statistical season actually came in 1968 when his 2.27 ERA was far more impressive relative to the offensive environment than his Cy Young year. That performance showcased his ability to pitch effectively in the American League during the height of the pitching revolution.
