Frank Malzone
Malzone might be the most underrated third baseman of the 1950s, a defensive wizard who made the impossible look routine at the hot corner. His three Gold Gloves tell only part of the story — he anchored Boston's infield during some lean years with hands that seemed magnetic.
The six All-Star selections weren't charity cases either. That .274 career average paired with 728 RBIs over 12 seasons represents steady, professional hitting from a position where defense often trumped offense. Malzone never hit for spectacular power, but his 133 home runs provided enough pop to keep pitchers honest.
What made Malzone special was his consistency on both sides of the ball during an era when third base was still evolving from a defensive afterthought. He played the position with a finesse that influenced how the game viewed corner infield defense, setting a standard that future Gold Glovers would chase.
