The Almanac's Take

Jones turned himself into a switch-hitting machine unlike almost any third baseman in history. His .303 career average from both sides of the plate over two decades represents a level of sustained excellence that modern players rarely approach. That 468 home run total doesn't capture his true offensive dominance — his 129 career OPS+ means he was nearly 30 percent better than league average for his entire 19-year run.

The 1999 MVP peaked late in his career, posting that ridiculous .364 average in 2008 at age 36 when most players are declining. His ability to hit for both power and average from the hot corner made him the cornerstone of Atlanta's dynastic run through the 1990s and 2000s.

What separated Jones from other slugging third basemen was his plate discipline and clutch gene. He walked more than he struck out for his career while delivering in October, helping anchor those Braves teams that won 14 consecutive division titles.
