The Almanac's Take

Fisk caught more games than any player in major league history — 2,226 behind the plate across 24 seasons. That durability alone separates him from nearly every backstop who ever lived, but his offensive production made him revolutionary for the position.

His 376 career home runs stood as the record for catchers until Mike Piazza broke it in 2004. More telling is his 112 career OPS+, which means he hit 12 percent better than league average over two and a half decades of grinding through the most physically demanding position in baseball.

The 1975 World Series Game 6 home run made him immortal, but his 1972 Rookie of the Year campaign showed his ceiling. That .909 OPS and 137 OPS+ represented peak offensive production from a Gold Glove defender who could handle a pitching staff for 140-plus games annually.
